An antivirus is a software that protects your device or system from foreign threats. The threats can be viruses, worms or trojan and there are many more. This works according to the threats and you need to delete or remove the affected file or it will attack ur system again. It keeps you updated about any malware or misfunctioning of any documents. Ex. Windows defender is an antivirus in Microsoft OS.

Paid antivirus software will usually also include heuristics to catch new, or zero-day threats, by either using genetic signatures to identify new variants of existing virus code or by running the file in a virtual environment (also called a sandbox), and watching what it does to see if it has malicious intent.
